Useful debian hints for newbies

Console commands
lspci - will show you all your pci devices
uname - print system information
with option -a will show you the linux version running
GUI stuff
Alt-F2 - run program

Specify partitions to be (auto)mounted

Do it all in /etc/fstab
-delete the noauto option to mount at boot time

To be able to read and write to ntfs, install ntfs-3g and modify /etc/fstab like:
/dev/ /media/ ntfs-3g defaults,locale=en_US.utf8 0 0

Then do:

mount -a

to mount all (or first unmount the ntfs partition if it was already mounted),

Black Mexico

I found an interesting article dealing with the ethnic identity of the black population of La Costa Chica, the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. The author, Bobby Vaughn, states that unlike most black diaspora communities, black descendants of this part of the world are "much more likely to consider themselves part of Mexico s mainstream gente de razón -- or civilized peoples in contradistinction to indigenous ethnic populations."

Music for IVE

I need to teach some Oaxacan music to the International Vocal Ensemble. I want to do one or two songs from the coast, but I can't decide on which one is better.

I just watched the 2004 Guelaguetza DVD and saw the "Danza de los Diablos" from Santa Maria Huazolotitlán and I think it captures the humor and the uniqueness of the Oaxacan coast really well. The instrumentation they use is:

1. Flauta ó harmónica.
2. Charrasca ó "quijada de burro," que se rasca con una pata de venado
3. Arcusa/Arcuza/bote/tigra - "especie de tambor de origen africano a cuyo cuero se conecta una vara que, untada con cera de Campeche y tallada con la mano, produce un sonido como el de la respiración de un gran felino."

Another interesting music that is on that DVD comes from Juchitan, where they use the following ancient instruments:

2. Carapachos de tortuga, batidos con astas de venado
